Flying Over Moyale
We tried to get an Ethiopian visa to cross the border by land at Moyale, we really tried. In Kampala, we visited the Ethiopian embassy twice, spending a total of about three hours there, pestering the lady at reception, showing her printouts from an Ethiopian government website that said we were eligible for visas, demanding to see the Consul.
To no avail. She was firm: no visa for us (as we are not residents of the country where the embassy is located), only at Bole International Airport in Addis Ababa.
So for the first time in nearly three months of travelling through ten countries, we have to get on an airplane. Our dream of a long and gruelling, but rewarding journey through the north of Kenya, across the Moyale border, and through the south of Ethiopia is cut short by a Kenya Airways direct flight from Nairobi to Addis Ababa. We are unable to experience the crossing of borders between Kenya and Ethiopia, to see the intersection and transition between nations and peoples and cultures, which would surely have been fascinating between two countries that seem so different. We try to see Moyale from the air.
